Bring Back Happy Memories

September is a nostalgic time. It is time for me to go back a few months and relive all those great memories at St. Aloysius' College and St. Aloysius' College Sixth Form. I find it hence fitting to post here my original and Friggieri-unmeddled version of the 2007 Soirée review, just for your enjoyment:

Soirée 2007 Review

St. Aloysius’ College 6th Form sprung no surprises as yet another Soirée was held, filled to the brim with spectacle and talent. It has demonstrated how, year after year, standards are kept top notch. Smiles were exposed and excitement shared as the curtains were drawn to three hours of drama, music, dancing and entertainment. The culmination to the musical Jesus Christ Superstar was a result of ascending intensity, triggered by high-quality items which were jovial, rapid and light-hearted. There were few regrets at the end of the show, for it was an outcome of a superb effort from all involved.

The Soirée comprised no less than eleven items, with an astounding 190 students taking part. With the relatively shorter items placed before the interval, the second part wholly featured the musical – a 55 minute long rundown of the last moments of the life of Christ on Earth. As the guests were immersed in the opening dance Rock This Party, the St. Aloysius’ Choir was clearing its throat to sing a medley of Queen’s successes. Next up were the much-awaited Maltese comedies il-Kurunell u t-Traditur and Mara tal-Papa` which surely set the people gasping for breath. However the pause from amusement was only brief enough for Take the Lead and I’m Good, another dance to be performed - for after that, three sketches from Monty Python 15 Minutes With the Pythons followed. The tempo slowed down and the crowd became relaxed as Desert Ambush was performed, a two-in-one dance.

Diversity was plentiful in every sense, and this was proven through the Italian Play l’Avaro by Carlo Goldoni. As ever in every Soirée, it was then time for the surprise appearance of the Crew and their antics, directed by the stage manager Mr Jean-Pierre Portanier, pretty much the man behind all the show. The last dance of the day was a three minute Explosive, a mixture of Spanish, Ballet and Jazz. After the video Soirée in the Making it was time for the winner of the SAC Battle of the Bands 2007 Relikc to come on stage, grab that mike, beat that drum and play the guitar.

This year, SAC brought along Farsons as its main bar provider for the interval. The result was a superb success, and together with the help of the Parent-Teacher Association, our guests went back in the theatre refreshed and well-fed.

As ever, it was most fitting that the Soirée finishes on a high, and how could this be achieved without Jesus Christ Superstar? Taken from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1970 musical, the theatre turned the time-turner by 2000 years and found itself in Jerusalem. The students’ voices were one melody as history repeated itself on the stage, coupled with proficient dancers and outstanding acting.

Much work was behind it all, but thanks to our organisers, sponsors mainly Go-Mobile, XFM, Pavi Supermarket, BOV, JB Stores, FXB, All Financial Services, Farsons, Saracino’s Café, Creart, Solutions Lab, Kryolan, Aphrodite, Michael and Guy and Hot Couture, as well as Fr. Rector, teachers, students and parents it was not only a success but an event we Aloysians will take with us for years to come. The SAC Soirée will remain a show of the best talents the college has always boasted highly of.
Take care,
Stephen (Picci).
